Photo Book
This project is centred around themes of nostalgia. It explores memory, time, place, culture and heritage and displacement. Through researching nostalgia, I came across multiple uses and forms it can take on. The book follows along a path of discovering how these different types of nostalgia relate to me, my culture and contemporary society. The first instalment of the book reflects my understandings of ‘Reflective Nostalgia’ which tries to hide signs of decay from the past. It is a tool used in politics to bring back the perfection of a past time, something that occurs in modern politics still. The images and transcript from an interview with my Nana show her experience living through Fascism, which focused heavily on the perfection of the past and fascination of the modern future, which today is a result of. It also introduces ideas of place and displacement through migration. I try to connect to the idea of displacement by collating film photographs I have taken over time in places that my Nana and I have both frequented. The second form of nostalgia, which is the most common, is a mourning of the past and a longing to revisit time through place. There are photos from old family albums that I have edited, significant childhood places that I revisited and photographed, my past houses, sketches that reflect memories and morphed perception of memories, and photocopied objects that I have inherited from old family members. The grain on all of these photos is meant to draw attention to the past and the ties we have to methods of creation that have been used in the past but are still relevant today.
